1. Introduction
CANOpenScope ("we", "us", "our") operates the website canopenscope.com and the CANOpenScope desktop application. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices available to you.
CANOpenScope is a local CANopen monitoring tool. A core principle of the product is that the CAN bus traffic you monitor, decode, filter, record and visualize stays on your own machine.
2. Information We Collect
Website (canopenscope.com)
When you visit our website we collect limited, aggregated usage information:
- Pages visited and time spent on the site.
- Approximate location derived from your IP address (country/region level).
- Browser and device type, operating system, and screen resolution.
- Referral source (e.g. the site or search engine that linked you here).
No personal account or registration is required to browse the website or to download the software, and we do not ask you to provide a name, email address or other identifying details to download it.
Desktop application
To use the CANOpenScope application you must register an account with a valid email address. We use this email address to create and secure your account.
When you use the application we collect anonymized usage data, limited to app usage information and error reports. We do not collect your user data or any CAN communication packets: the bus traffic you monitor, decode, filter, record and visualize stays on your own machine, as do your recordings, filters and configuration.
3. Cookies and Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our website. Google Analytics sets cookies and similar technologies on your browser to collect the anonymous usage information described above.
You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. You can also opt out of Google Analytics across websites using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
4. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and manage your account, including authentication and security.
- Understand how the website is used and improve its content and structure.
- Improve the application using anonymized usage data and error reports.
- Measure downloads and site performance.
- Diagnose technical issues and maintain security.
- Respond to you if you contact us directly.
5. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell your personal information.
We share limited analytics data with Google LLC in connection with Google Analytics, under its data-processing terms. We may also disclose information when required to do so by law, or to protect the rights, safety and security of our users and services.
6. Data Retention
Analytics data is retained according to our Google Analytics retention settings and is used only in aggregate form. Because the application stores its data locally, you can delete your recordings and configuration at any time directly on your device.
7. Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information we process. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Rights
Depending on your region, you may have rights under laws such as the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Request correction or deletion of that information.
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Request a copy of your data in a portable format.
Your CAN bus recordings and configuration never leave your device and are not collected by us. The personal information we hold about you is limited to your account email address and the website analytics data described above; our app usage and error data is anonymized and cannot be linked back to you. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below.
9. Children's Privacy
Our website and application are not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
