Interoperable · Hobby Friendly

Built to be compatible with CANopenNode.

CANOpenScope interoperates with the open-source CANopenNode stack - the same frames, the same Object Dictionary, the same PDO mappings. The app itself is not open source, but it is hobby-friendly: free for personal use, with logical commercial pricing.

01 · Capabilities

Everything a CANopen engineer needs.

Six tightly integrated tools, one native app. A layered architecture keeps decoding fast and hardware support broad.

01

Live View

Real-time message log and data table, bus-load chart, active-node discovery and heartbeat states - the whole network at a glance.

CANOpenScope Live View screenshot
02

Data Visualizer

Plot PDO-mapped variables as line or bar charts over a rolling window. Zoom, pan, pause - watch control loops breathe.

CANOpenScope Data Visualizer screenshot
03

Timeline

Every decoded frame on its own lane - NMT, SYNC, PDO, SDO, heartbeat, EMCY, ERR. SystemView-style pan, zoom and hover decoding.

04

SDO & PDO

Read and write the Object Dictionary, map and monitor PDO channels, auto-import EDS, XPD and XDD device profiles with on-wire COB-ID resolution.

05

Conformance Test

A CiA-style suite against any target node - bootup, state transitions, SDO, PDO, heartbeat - with per-test status and fix guidance.

AI Ready · MCP

An in-app AI Gateway exposes live bus data over Model Context Protocol. Point any MCP-capable assistant at it to inspect and drive the network from natural language. Compatible with most AI agents, including GitHub Copilot, Hermes, Claude Code, and more.

Use case Ask the assistant: “Tell me STM32G0 canopen state and change its heartbeat to every 1000ms”

Projects

Save your whole setup as a .csp project and reopen it any time.

  • Node names and COB-ID labels
  • Device profiles (EDS, XPD, XDD) per node
  • PDO mappings and selected Object Dictionary entries

Bus Explorer & manual TX

Browse every node and object on the bus, and send any frame by hand.

  • Manual transmit: CAN ID, DLC, data bytes
  • Optional periodic send, in ms
  • Hex or decimal input in every ID and value field

Protocol coverage

The CiA 301 services you debug every day, decoded and driveable.

  • NMT state commands and node reset
  • SDO read / write with type-aware values
  • Node scan via SDO 0x1000 (IDs 1-127) + heartbeat
  • RTR frames and error-frame decoding

Roadmap Record & Playback is coming in a future release.

02 · AI Gateway

Let your AI assistant read the bus.

CANOpenScope embeds an MCP server. Any MCP-capable assistant can query live frames, nodes and Object Dictionaries - and, only if you allow it, control capture or transmit.

Connect in one line

  1. In CANOpenScope, open Settings → AI Gateway and turn on Enable AI Gateway (MCP server).
  2. Start the Live View so decoded frames flow in.
  3. Register the endpoint with your assistant:
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http canopenscope http://127.0.0.1:10531/mcp
Codex
codex mcp add --url http://127.0.0.1:10531/mcp canopenscope

Cursor, Claude Desktop and others: add a Streamable HTTP MCP server at http://127.0.0.1:10531/mcp

  • Loopback only - bound to 127.0.0.1, never exposed to the network.
  • Off by default - you turn the gateway on.
  • Transmit is separate - send_packet has its own switch.

Tools

06 · FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is CANOpenScope?
A native desktop CANopen monitoring tool. It decodes, filters and visualizes live bus traffic, and provides professional tools like SDO Object Dictionary access, PDO mapping and CiA-style conformance testing.
Is CANOpenScope compatible with CANopenNode?
Yes. CANOpenScope is built to interoperate with the open-source CANopenNode stack. It speaks the same protocol, Object Dictionary and PDO mappings, so nodes running CANopenNode are decoded, monitored and controlled like any other compliant device. CANOpenScope itself is not open source, but it is hobby friendly - free for personal use, with logical commercial pricing.
What CAN hardware does it support?
PCAN, Kvaser, IXXAT, GS-USB, Innomaker and SocketCAN (Linux). Adapters are driven through a Python bridge built on python-can, so new interfaces are added without touching the protocol engine.
How does licensing work?
CANOpenScope is free for personal use. Company use requires a license.
Which platforms are supported?
Windows 10/11 and Linux x64. On Windows, get the certified build from the Microsoft Store, or use the direct installer and portable builds. On Linux, install the .deb package or run the portable build. The GUI is Flutter-based, so other platforms are on the roadmap.
Can I import my existing device profiles?
Yes - EDS, XPD and XDD device profile files are parsed to populate per-node Object Dictionaries and PDO channels, and PDO mappings auto-import into your project.
